Captain Robert Nutting, USCG

Captain Nutting graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in May 1979. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering he was assigned to USCGC BUTTONWOOD in Honolulu, HI working Aids to Navigation.

In 1981 he assumed command of USCGC POINT BARROW, an 82-foot patrol boat homeported in Monterey, CA. During his two-year tour, he participated in search and rescue missions and law enforcement patrols. Upon completion of this tour, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, earning his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering.

From 1985 to 1989, he served at the Coast Guard Electronics Engineering Center in Wildwood, NJ, where he was Section Chief in the Loran-C Branch. In 1989, CAPT Nutting assumed command of USCGC FIR, the Coast Guard’s oldest commissioned cutter homeported in Seattle, WA.

After two years of working Aids to Navigation in the Pacific Northwest, he reported to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC where he was assigned to the Human Resources Management Branch of the Office of Command, Control, and Communications. CAPT Nutting was responsible for officer career development, assignment recommendations, and postgraduate education programs for all Coast Guard electronic engineering, computer and information system, and telecommunication specialists.

CAPT Nutting assumed command of the USCG Station St. Petersburg, FL and was dual-hatted as Deputy Group Commander of USCG Group St. Petersburg, in July 1994. In 1997, he returned to Coast Guard Headquarters as Chief, Sensors and Support Systems Division of the Office of Electronic Systems. Two years later, he was assigned as the Coast Guard Federal Executive Fellow at The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

In 2000, CAPT Nutting assumed command of the USCG Command and Control Engineering Center in Portsmouth, VA and was responsible for the development, integration, training and support of current and future Coast Guard command, control and navigation systems.

Captain Nutting assumed the duties as Chief of the C4IT and Security Division, Coast Guard Atlantic Area, in July 2004. His responsibilities include operational and administrative control of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Communications System (LANTCOMMSYS); coordination of C3 operational requirements, plans and procedures; and operational and administrative oversight of the Atlantic Area Communications Security (COMSEC), Information Security (INFOSEC), Personnel Security (PERSEC), Physical Security, and Force Protection programs.
