Captain Mary Anderson

Captain Mary L. Anderson, a native of Southern California, graduated from Central University of Iowa in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Enlisting in March 1978, she completed basic training in Orlando Florida. From June 1979 to September 1980, she was in pipeline training for the Nuclear Power Program. Selected for Officer Candidate School, she earned her commission in February 1981.
In March 1981, she reported to the Naval Reserve Center, San Diego, and served as Division Officer for the Training Division. A year later, Captain Anderson was assigned Division Officer for Manpower and Medical Divisions.
Upon, reporting to Beachmaster Unit One, San Diego in April 1983, Captain Anderson assumed the duties of Assistant Operations/Communications Officer. In July 1984 she became the Operations Officer and Head of the Operations Department.
She then attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where she earned a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Communications Engineering. After her studies she reported to the Defense Information Systems Agency for a joint duty assignment in the Defense Switched Network Program Office as a Communications Engineering Staff Officer. In this assignment she also served as the Contracting Officers Technical Representative for the contract providing all CONUS DSN services.
In December 1992 she assumed duties as Officer in Charge of NTCC Hampton Roads. In September 1994, she reported to NCTAMS LANT as Executive Officer. Selected for a sea duty assignment, she reported in March 1995, to Commander Carrier Group FOUR, as the assistant Chief of Staff for Information Systems.
Captain Anderson commanded the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Sicily from May 1997 until May 1999. Her command provided direct communication support to numerous operations including Noble Anvil, and Allied Force.
In June 1999 she reported to the Bureau of Naval Personal, Millington Tennessee for duty as the Assistant Branch Head Fleet Support Assignments. Captain Anderson was selected to be Head Detailer/FSO Assignments Branch and lead the community through the transition and stand-up of the Information Professional (IP) and Human Resources Communities. Upon completion of the FSO transition, she served as the first Head Detailer for the IP community.
She reported to Commander Third Fleet Staff in April 2003, assuming the duties of Assistant Chief of Staff for C4I.
In April 2005 she assumed command of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic.
Her personal Awards include Legion of Merit Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards) Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), and Navy Achievement Medal.
